161.      This statement is qualified by Buero in his acceptance speech to the Royal Spanish Academy in which he makes the distinction between explicit and implicit aspects of tragedy. The explicit aspect is limited to happenings on stage whereas the implicit aspect includes the audience and the author himself and in a broader sense, society as a whole. For example, Unamuno's El otro may be considered hopeless in the explicit sense of tragedy, yet hopeful in the broader implicit sense. The hopelessness witnessed on stage could well be the basis for hope for improvement of society through audience participation and eventual ennoblement.
