A letter written by Galdós in Santander, dated 14 January 1880, to Don Miguel H. de la Cámara, tells of the progress of Un faccioso más y algunos frailes menos. He writes: «Van los pliegos 13 y 4. Las diez galeradas que tengo no las mando hasta no recibir más. Espero galeradas, pues aunque voy es preciso ganar tiempo. El libro está concluido. Las dos cuartillas que faltan son de esas que a pesar de todos los esfuerzos, no puedo hacer nunca hasta no ver las últimas pruebas. Ya no me preocupa el final, ni nada del Faccioso.
