Vol. I, 95. Juanito's father when refering to his own youth quite naturally says «cuando yo era pollo» (Vol. I, 17). Fortuna's baby is also called «pollo» (Vol. IV, 244). And Jacinta and Juanito are called «los pollos». (Vol. I, 163).

Nueva, Madrid, 1951, p. 50) we find the following comment by Baroja which helps us date this meaning of «pollo»: «Entre las palabras de 1885 a 1900 había algunas bastante gráficas. Se usaban, por ejemplo, en la calle, las palabras pollo, sietemesino, silbante y pirante, dedicadas al jovencito que se distinguía por su elegancia».

As a matter of fact, Fortunata thinks she also is an angel, like Jacinta. The first time she says it (Vol. IV, 300) she retracts herself immediately: «Aquella es un ángel; yo, otro ángel; digo, yo no...» In the end, of course, she does not retract herself; yet she still thinks of her «angelicality» by reference to Jacinta thus revealing she has not liberated herself: «¿No lo sabe?..., soy ángel... yo también..., mona del Cielo [Jacinta's nickname]» (Vol. IV, 370).
