It seemed appropriate to mark the first participation of the Cervantes Society of America in the annual meetings of the Modern Language Association of America, in December of 1984, with the publication in Cervantes of the papers presented at that meeting. The contributions of Dudley, Gerli, Cascardi, and Allen were delivered at the CSA-sponsored panel on «Genre Definition and Interplay in Cervantes' Fiction», moderated by Peter Dunn, whose «Introduction» precedes them here. Mary Gaylord Randel's lecture formed part of a second CSA / MLA session and Ruth El Saffar's contribution was delivered at a separate MLA panel on «The Imagination in the Renaissance».

We welcome Howard Mancing, who has joined the Cervantes staff in 1986 as Book Review Editor. Books for review should be sent directly to him as indicated on the masthead.
