Prizes for 1988-1989

Hispania is pleased to announce the awarding of prizes for the best essays in the area of Pedagogy for the years 1988 and 1989. A special advisory committee consisting of Roberta Hogan (Chicago, IL) and Mirta González (California State University-San Bernardino) assisted the Editor in selecting the following best essays. In Pedagogy: Elementary Schools and Secondary Schools, the winner is Marilyn F. Kiss for her essay, «From Perú to Pamplona: Integrating Slides into the Lesson Plan», (Hispania 72.2 [1989]: 422-25). In Pedagogy: Colleges and Universities, the winner is Catherine G. Bellver for her essay, «Literature and Visual Aids: Textual, Contextual, and Intertextual Applications», (Hispania 74.4 [1989]:1078-82).

We congratulate the two winners, who will receive a cash prize from AATSP, and thank the members of the advisory committee for their work.

Hispania Enters the Electronic Era

Beginning with the March issue of 1991, Hispania will enter the emerging world of electronic media. Effective immediately, all material accepted for any issue of our journal must be submitted to the Editorial Office on diskette, utilizing one of nine word processing programs. Material sent in for consideration by the Editor or Section Heads may be submitted either on diskette or on paper, but once the submission is accepted for publication, a computerized version on diskette must be provided. For details on which programs are acceptable and other aspects of how to submit material on diskette, see the special page of instructions following the initial title pages of this issue.

Changes in Hispania's Editorial Board

I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of several members of our Editorial Board whose terms expire at the end of 1990. John S. Vincent has served as the principal reader for Luso-Brazilian studies for many years; Stella T. Clark has served for many years both as chief proofreader for our journal and as section head of Pedagogy: Colleges and Universities; Francine Masiello has served as our reader for Latin American poetry. As they finish their years of service to Hispania and AATSP, I offer them my sincere gratitude for jobs well done and our profession's appreciation for their invaluable contributions.

I also want to welcome the first of many colleagues who will be taking up the work of those who are leaving the Board at the end of their terms. Roberto González Echevarría has joined the Editorial Board to be a reader in the field of Latin American literature; Douglas Benson will be a reader for modern Spanish literature and section head of Pedagogy: Colleges and Universities; Teresa Bolet Rodríguez joins the Board as section head of The Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian World. Gerard Melito has recently begun his work as section head of Pedagogy: Community Colleges. I look forward with pleasure to working with all of these individuals during the last two years of my Editorship.

Special All-Portuguese Issue of Hispania

I am pleased to announce that the September 1991 issue will be devoted entirely to essays dealing with Luso-Brazilian topics. The only other regular sections that will appear will be the Reviews of books and Official Announcements of AATSP

I began to prepare for this special issue by writing to all AATSP members who had indicated in their annual dues payment an interest in Portuguese, inviting them to submit a proposal for an essay. I also announced the project in one of my Editorials. We received over 75 proposals, with space for approximately 20-25 in the issue, depending on the length of each essay. To assist me in the selection of the 20-25 possible essays, I appointed a special committee for the all-Portuguese issue, with Bobby J. Chamberlain as chair; the other members are Mary L. Daniel, Orlando Kelm, and Mary Vermette.

The special committee has made its recommendations, and I have informed the authors of the proposals selected of the various editorial deadlines. I have written to the members whose proposals were not selected by the committee thanking them for their participation in this project and inviting them to submit their proposed essays to Hispania through the regular submission process. I sincerely hope that this special Portuguese issue of Hispania will contribute importantly to the awareness of all AATSP members of current developments in scholarship in the many areas of Luso-Brazilian studies.
