In the past several issues of Hispania you have seen references to the facility called DEPOSITORIO HISPÁNICO, an experimental effort to explore the feasibility of establishing a repository of resource materials for Hispanists. As those of you who have been following our experiments with computer based communications know, the DEPOSITORIO is accessed through the «BITNET» academic network, a facility provided in most institutions at no cost to faculty members. After a year of learning, we have now decided to take the next step and restructure it in a more operational way and expand the contents.

In order to give you a clearer picture of just what this resource is and its purpose, I have assembled here the texts of the new HELP files that now reside in the DEPOSITORIO and which have been devised to make it easier for you to take advantage of the materials that are currently there. A major purpose is also to make it convenient for you to add your own contributions to this common enterprise for Hispanism. Also included is an example of some of the things that are presently available. There is only a very modest amount of material that can be currently downloaded, but we hope that with this description and the new design of the file structure you will want to share with your colleagues things that you have in electronic form right now. All that may be required for you to upload your materials is a slight reformatting of your texts in accordance with the requirements of ASCII transmissions, and a knowledge of how to get them on to your university's main-frame for re-transmission over BITNET.

The following texts of our HELP files represent the current framework of the DEPOSITORIO. We expect it to evolve as the resource expands and your contributions require new features to be added. We welcome your ideas on how to make this facility truly effective and responsive to your professional needs. Please address your suggestions and inquiries to me.

I am including here selected descriptive files, and a sample of the data, that will serve as examples of the file formats and divers sorts of materials. Purely for reasons of convenience (existing materials do not yet reflect the new indexing) I have used in these examples only things I myself have uploaded to the depository. They should, nonetheless, serve our purpose here. The following texts are actual folders in the DEPOSITORIO. The file name appears in parenthesis, in caps, at the head of each file.

DESCRIPTION OF THE FACILITY

The purpose of the DEPOSITORIO is a simple one, to provide a place for the collection and free distribution of all kinds of materials that can be of use to Hispanists in their professional preparation, teaching, and research. The following is a summary of the essential features of the enterprise.

1. COLLECTION OF MATERIALS

a. Contributors: all interested Hispanists.

b. Kinds of materials: bibliographies; curricula for degrees; course structures; quizzes, exercises; required reading for courses, degrees, subject areas; biographies; historical outlines; lists of works; abstracts; study and research topics; and so on.

c. Method of transmission: all material submitted must be in appropriate electronic format (see HOW-TO-SUBMIT. HELP). It can be uploaded via BITNET Materials may also be sent to Dr. Feustle on diskette by mail.

d. Screening: Dr. Davison, and on occasion Dr. Feustle, will scan the submissions for classification and minor format modification. NO EDITING will be done, simply screening and regularizing of descriptive material, file designation, and, where advisable, possible division into segments to ensure easy manipulation.

2. DISTRIBUTION

a. Membership downloading, through BITNET. If the amount of material makes it advisable at some time in the future, distribution by diskette may be initiated.

3. RATIONALE

a. The collection and submission of materials can produce a substantial amount of resources in a relatively short period of time. An unevenness in the quality and preparation of the items is to be expected. However, any shortcomings can be corrected by the users who download data since they will select and edit the files according to their own needs and criteria.

b. The types of information collected will likely be extremely varied, more so than anything previously gathered by conventional publication, where marketability and other traditional restraints prevent the distribution of many sorts of academic materials. Needless to say, no copyrighted material will be allowed in the files except in a form and quantity that strictly observe the copyright laws as they apply to the use of published materials in scholarly articles and books. EACH SUBMISSION IS REQUIRED TO BEAR THE NAME OF THE SENDER AND A STANDARD DECLARATION OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE MATERIAL AND AN AFFIRMATION THAT IT DOES NOT INFRINGE UPON ANY COPYRIGHTS (see below, Copyrights and Permissions).

c. Ease of personalized dissemination in electronic form.

d. Flexibility of electronic texts, that without retyping can be copied, modified, extrapolated, etc. -that is, culled and reproduced in many different ways, for whatever purpose the users might wish to put them to- all manipulation being carried out easily in word processors.

e. In summary, a resource whereby we can all share with others things we ourselves have collected, written, or prepared that might make our teaching or research more effective and easier.

COPYRIGHTS AND PERMISSIONS

Rights of authorship of published materials of all kinds -books, articles, software, etc. -must be rigorously observed for any item submitted to this resource. It is your responsibility as a contributor to see that these rights are not infringed upon . (See HOW-TO-SUBMIT.HELP)

Because of the inherent structure of the file system in our VAX server we are limited in the way we can design the indexing levels for a large variety of different kinds of materials. We must rely on the two basic elements of a filename, the name and its extender (for example, FILENAME.EXTENDER). The period is a necessary divider in the syntax of the complete name. However, we are able to simulate subdivisions, or subcategories, by using a dash to separate groups of characters. An example would be: DARÍO-P1.TEXT-MOD which would contain the information (Rub;en) DARÍO-P(oem)l.TEXT-Mod(ernism).

To effect a semblance of uniformity we use the following design to communicate as much information as possible within the complete file name:

FILENAME.EXTENDER

(subject/kind/author-contributor).(type-place/era-level)

It is important to note that the EXTENDER is the element which designates the major category or class of the file. The FILENAME then specifies the particular characteristic of the item within the class or type of material. The classes (EXTENDERS) that we have established at the moment are the following:

.ABST = abstract

.ART = article

.BIBLIO = bibliography

.BIO = biography

.BOOK = book length text

.DEGREE = degree programs, requirements, etc.

.EX = exercise

.EXD = exercise in DATA format

.GAME = educational game

.HELP = help, information on how to use the DEPOSITORIO

.INTERV = interview

.LIST = listing (not bibliography)

.NEWS = notices, conferences, computer news

.PROG = computer program

.PROGL = computer language

.PROGU = computer utility

.QZ = quiz or exam

.QZD = quiz or exam in DATA format

.REVU = review

.SYL = course outline or summary

.TEXT = literary text

.WKINPRG = work-in-progress

We also use subFILENAMES to allow necessary distinctions. The most common are:

-Pn= Poetryn = number of item,
-Sn= Storye. g. P3 = the 3rd
-Nn= Novelpoem in the submis-
-En= Essaysion-set by an author
-Tn= Theaterof that name.

In order to refine these classes, we have chosen the following sub-EXTENDERS:

-PEN= Peninsular(includes Portuguese, e.g., PEN-PORT)
-LA= Latin American(includes Brazilian
-MED= Medieval and other non-Span
-COL= Colonialish, e. g., LA-BRAZ)
-GA = Golden Age
-18= 18th-Century
-19= 19th-Century
-MOD= Modernism
-98= Generation of '98
-20= 20th-Century

Other sub-extenders, which may be used in conjunction with all others are:

-LANG = Language

-LIT = Literature

-CULT = Culture

-HIST = History

-BEG = Beginning level

-INT = Intermediate level

-ADV = Advanced level

-SEM = Seminar

-PHD = Doctoral

-MA = Master's

-BA = Bachelor's

Example: SUBJUNC1.EXD-LANG-INT

(subjunctive 1st file.lang-exercise in DATA format, intermediate level)

And two special sub-extenders:

-ARC = Archived file, i. e., compressed

-HQX = Archived file, especially for Macintosh

Really LARGE files, 80K or more, will have to be compressed before transmission via BITNET. Colleagues desiring to transmit files of this size should consult with Dr. Feustle so that he can send them the programs and instructions necessary for archiving (compressing) them. Files with the extender ARC must be decompressed with the corresponding utility program before they can be used.

HQX, the second special sub-extender, is used for archived Macintosh files. These files are «unpacked» with other special programs such as BINHEX and STUFFIT.)

The files called A-README are especially important because they identify the contributor and provide a description that will make your choice of materials to download easier and more precise.

There are two aspects of these files that are essential to the convenience and accuracy of file maintenance:

FIRST, the NAME of the A-README; it should include 1> the INITIALS (see note below) of the contributor, the NUMBER of the contribution (i. e., the first, second, [etc.] contribution package by that person) and 2> the APPROPRIATE EXTENDER to provide minimal information on the nature of the data (IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU MAKE UP THIS FILENAME CAREFULLY); for example:

SECOND, the next feature of A-README files that is required is the DESCRIPTION of the materials sent. Some files require little description, others may need several sentences. For example:

1> Diacritics: The coding system used for most of the datasets is as follows:

;(vowel) = accented vowel

;;n/N = n/N with tilde

;;u/U = u/U with dieresis

?? = inverted?

!! = inverted!

2> Also, a right bracket (]) is used for a SIMULATED comma. If you cannot create such a character, you might use a semi-colon or dash instead. A genuine comma CANNOT be used, of course, because it is a delimiter in DATA statements in BASIC. Line numbers and «DATA» can be removed and the elements can then be used in data files that are read by a program, or they can be printed and used in traditional ways as handouts.

3> There may be typos or errors caused by transfers from one computer to another; it is wise to proofread the sets carefully before you use them.

4> These materials were designed for SELF EVALUATION by the student. The model answers are displayed after the students have responded. They then compare the response with the model and judge the correctness.

5> The current numbering is arbitrary; the set may have to be renumbered according to the design of your own programs.

NOTE ON YOUR INITIALS: Before you make your filenames, check the complete filelist of the DEPOSITORIO. If you find initials identical to your own, alter yours in the filename to make yours different. For example, if your initials are ND and you find another ND in the list, you can add a character to yours, e. g., N&D, to make yours unique.

Comparative Literature Seminar:

«WHITMAN AND NERUDA»

(Advanced knowledge of Spanish required)

Objectives:

To understand as well as we can the uniqueness of Whitman's and Neruda's poetry, the themes and poetics, and how Neruda's work expands Whitman's to encompass the realities of the New World. One way to such understanding will be through an effort to experience as personally as possible their particular vision of life.

Requirements:

The assigned poetic readings will be modest in quantity to insure that you read them with great care and attention. Contemplate the images, think about the ideas, and LISTEN to the voice. The poetry is, after all, what we are really interested in. All of Neruda's assigned poems are to be read in Spanish (Belitt's translations in FIVE DECADES... are terrible!).

Familiarize yourself with each of the books on reserve and TAKE CAREFUL NOTES (in Spanish or English -the language you use does not matter- to be turned into me for my perusal) on Alegría's WALT WHITMAN EN HISPANOAMÉRICA.

We will read Neruda's MEMOIRS over several weeks for its biographical value and the picture of the times it provides. Each of you will make a presentation to the class on a topic to be chosen in consultation with me. You may do this in any way appropriate to the subject, and you will distribute (or specify items in our texts), ONE CLASS MEETING IN ADVANCE, any selected reading material or aids you want the other students to be familiar with to help in their understanding of your discourse. The presentation should last between 45 to 60 minutes. Finally, check with me at least two class meetings before your exposition in order to outline for me how you are going to present the subject.

Suggested topics for presentation:

-«Alturas de Macchu Picchu», its philosophic and poetic significance and how it might relate to Whitman.

-CANTO GENERAL, an overview with selected representative readings for the other students193.

-RESIDENCIAS EN LA TIERRA (either of the first two)194.

-ESPAÑA EN EL CORAZÓN, with appropriate introduction of the historical backgroun195d.

-CIEN SONETOS DE AMOR, as a book and as it relates to the tradition of love poetry196.

-Make an earnest ORIGINAL translation of a coherent body of poems into English.

-Prepare a formal, near-professional reading (45 minutes) of Neruda or Whitman, with appropriate introductory commentary.

-A serious comparative study of one precise aspect of the poetry of Whitman and Neruda.

Perhaps these documents will give you an adequate idea of the purpose of the DEPOSITORIO; I hope they will whet your appetite for participation in this common effort. Its success depends on intelligent sharing of our personal academic files and experience. And the more self-sustaining the facility is, the richer its resources can become.
