The remote possibility exists that the encounter with Nerissa is the result of Flange's having been knocked unconscious by one of the boobytraps which Bolingbroke had set up for the gypsies. Borges, in such Ficciones stories as «El Sur» and «El fin», suggests that part of the action comes from the fevered imagination of his characters.
