Fontilles and leprosy in Spain

Clinic and laboratory of the Fontilles Sanatorium

Clinic façade, built in 1921-1922.

This unique building, inspired by the Austrian Sezessionsstil and whose authorship is unknown was designed in 1921 and inaugurated a year later. It was designed to bring together the clinical and medical research facilities. The morgue was located in the semi-basement. It was only accessible from the rear and was thus hardly visible from the busy areas. The bacteriological laboratory was located on the ground floor and was accessible from the main entrance. It had the necessary instruments for blood tests as well as mucus tests and provided a series of clinical services: a healing and reconnaissance room, an operating room and an X-ray room. The facilities of this first laboratory led to the creation of the Fontilles National Institute and School of Leprology in 1927, which would be directed by Dr Mauro Guillén until the arrival of Dr Pablo Montañés, in 1933. In 1941, the clinic and laboratory were moved to the new building that had resulted from the remodelling and joining of the old Purísima and Central pavilions. The old clinic was remodelled as a residence for volunteers.
