Fontilles and leprosy in Spain

Workspaces for women admitted to the Fontilles Sanatorium

The disinfection pavilion.

In the background, three women are watching the authorities being received at the entrance of the theatre from the door of the disinfection pavilion. The disinfection pavilion, also known as «Autoclave» or «Caldera» was built around 1925. It was a single-storey rectangular building, divided into two sections by a partitioning wall and a disinfection stove. The «infected» clothes came on one side and were poured into the stove tank through one of its doors. After being disinfected, they were retrieved from the «aseptic» room, on the other side of the wall, through the second stove door. From there, the disinfected clothes were taken to the wardrobe, located in the adjoining building, where they were ironed, patched and stored to then be distributed. This building, located next to the sewing building and the Virgen de los Desamparados pavilion, was part of women's living and working areas.
